The 1983 Lafite has come out of its dumb, monolithic stage and has begun to reveal the classic mineral, lead pencil, cedary perfume it is renowned for possessing. A forceful wine for Lafite, it offers medium to full body and good underlying structure, particularly for a 1983. Deeper and more compelling at age ten than it has been in the past, it should prove to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage. This terrific effort should reach its peak by the turn of the century and last at least 25-30 years. Last tasted, 6/93.
This is Lafite. Prune and spices, with a cedar and wet tobacco character on the nose. Even tea. Full and rich with a dark China tea and cedar character. Just a hint of chocolate. Opens in the glass like a genie. Amazing.
One of the toughest Lafites recently made, with tons of tannin, backbone and rich fruit. Like a great Lafite from the '50s. Drinkable in 1995.
Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is one of the most collectable wines in the world. Purchased in 1868 it has remained continuously in the Rothschild family. The 1996 vintage onwards heralded some of the best wines in their history; 2003 and 2009 are notably outstanding. Elegant, fresh, with great fruit purity and remarkable ageing potential. The second wine, Carruades de Lafite, has also been intensely collected over the past decade.
